“You had the finest, most powerful, most resonant voice of any of the young male swans in the Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in Montana.” “I did?” said the cob. “Yes, indeed. Everytime I heard you say something in that deep voice of yours, I was ready to go anywhere with you.” “You were?” said the cob. He was obviously delighted with his wife’s praise. It tickled his vanity and made him feel great. He had always fancied himself as having a fine voice, and now to hear it from his wife’s own lips was a real thrill.”

When was the last time you complimented your spouse? I mean really complimented them. Telling them something about themselves that they don’t know or even more important reminding them of something they have forgotten in the midst of the demands of everyday life. In the above example, the wife’s compliment delighted her husband and thrilled him to know how she really felt and what she really thought of him. Today’s challenge is simple, think of a way to compliment your spouse and then do it! The idea is not to go about it selfishly, desiring a compliment in return. Compliment your spouse because of the positive impact it can have on them and your marriage.

I absolutely love this guys! It made me cry.
” … and now to hear it from his wife’s own lips was a real thrill.” You know how you never get bored of hearing a favourite song, I think it’s the same effect. Also, it’s like he knew … but didn’t ‘really’ know, it was in her confirmation that it became the “real thrill.” It speaks less about his ability and more about the position she has in his heart. If she wasn’t so important, it wouldn’t have had the same affect on him.
Again, thanks for the reminder of the power I hold over my husband’s heart.
I’m so glad an artistic person such as yourself got so much out of it! Your response is right on in that the position that she had, made the impact of her words all the more thrilling to him. Thanks for the great comment and for your regular reading!

I think the secret’s out now — I get so much more out of kids books than any adult should LOL.

You are so right, Robyn. We often realize that the poor opinions of those we do not respect carry little weight with us: “What do you care what they think? What do they know?” Why is it we forget about the power of that other side of the coin when someone we share a caring relationship with could benefit from a compliment or kind word? We either neglect to say anything at all or quickly gloss over the compliment with a “good job” or “thanks” when a few more words will make all the difference. Just another few seconds spent builds the relationship: “Good job, just like you always do,” or “Thanks, I really needed help with getting the house clean. You never let me down.” Those in our lives who count most should be able to count on us the most.
I agree Dan. It really doesn’t take much extra and it means SO much!
